Wi-Fi Home Security Cameras: How to Choose the Right One

A Wi-Fi camera lets you check on your home from your phone, get an alert when something moves and talk to whoever is on the other side. But not every camera fits every spot. Before choosing, answer three questions: where will you put it, how will you power it, and how much space do you want to cover?

What they all have

The Advanced Home cameras in this guide share the essentials:

  • You view and control them from the Advanced Home app, and you can share them with your family.
  • Motion detection with notifications on your phone.
  • Two-way audio: listen and talk from the app.
  • Night vision.
  • Recording on a microSD card (sold separately) and a cloud storage option.
  • They work with Alexa and Google Home, so you can view them on a compatible smart display.

For indoors

Light-socket cameras

If you don't want to drill holes or run cables, a light-socket camera screws into a ceiling lamp holder and takes power from it. They all rotate to cover almost the whole room and follow movement automatically.

  • LC-1361: 3 MP, rotates 355° horizontally and 90° vertically.
  • LC-1444: 2K resolution (3 MP), 340° and 85° rotation, color night vision, built-in light and a 90 dB siren.
  • LC-1443: dual lens, 2 MP each (4 MP total) to watch two areas at once, 340° and 85° rotation, color night vision and a 90 dB siren.
  • LC-1438: dual lens, connects to both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks, color night vision and a siren.

Tabletop or wall cameras

They plug into an outlet with their power adapter and sit on a shelf or mount on the wall.

  • LC-1445: 5 MP, 350° and 80° rotation, auto tracking, color night vision and a 90 dB siren.
  • LC-1410: dual lens, 2 MP each, 340° and 65° rotation, color night vision.
  • LC-1417: has a screen for video calls, handy for face-to-face talks with someone at home; records in 1080p and rotates 350°.

For outdoors

Outside, a camera needs to withstand dust and rain. These have IP65 protection:

  • LC-1411: 4 MP bullet camera with 180° and 45° rotation, color night vision up to 15 m, deterrence light and a 90 dB siren. It connects by Wi-Fi or by network cable.
  • LC-1412: dual lens, 3 MP each, 300° and 90° rotation, auto tracking, color night vision and a siren. Wall mounted.

Wire-free: battery or solar panel

If there is no outlet near the spot you want to watch, choose a battery-powered camera:

  • LC-1413: 5200 mAh rechargeable battery, 4 MP, color night vision, siren and IP65 protection, for indoor or outdoor use.
  • LC-1446: 8000 mAh battery recharged by its solar panel, for outdoor use. 2K resolution, 340° and 90° rotation, auto tracking and a 100 dB siren.

Tips for best results

  • Almost all of them connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks. Make sure the signal reaches the spot where you'll install the camera.
  • For smooth video, plan on at least 1 Mbps of upload speed per camera.
  • Use a microSD card within the capacity listed on the product page (up to 128 GB on most models).
  • Turn on activity zones or person detection to get fewer false alerts.
